I've been away from here for a while, and haven't been doing much in the way of retouching practice... I've just gotten Photoshop 7.0, though, and I was desperate to try out my new toy on something challenging. Be warned, there are a lot of steps, and I have no real rhyme or reason to how I went about this - it's been a while!
1. Used the healing brush on anything remotely resembling a blemish, scratch or spot. (I had to - this is the big thing I'd been wanting this program for!)
2. Cropped the little bit of white edge out of the image. I may go back and add a cleaner version later. I also straightened the image up a bit when I cropped.
3.To compensate for the sliver of whitespace in the upper right corner, I copied and pasted a long skinny triangle over the white space.
4. Flattened image.
5. Used Channel Mixer Adjustment Level to convert image to a truer grayscale. Monochrome - Red 86%, Green 18%, Blue 16%, Constant 0%.
6. Curves Adjustment Layer - Auto Adjust. This made the lines sharper and improved the contrast.
7. Flattened image again.
*I made the initial colorizations in the following steps, just to get an idea of what the colors would look like. *
8. Used pen tool to select skin. Solid Color Adjustment layer set to 26% opacity, using skin selection as the quick mask - #e3c2ae as the color. Set layer blend mode to Color.
9. Used pen tool to select hair. Solid Color Adjustment layer set t 30% opacity - #a56b46
Again, set to Color blend mode.
10. Selected cap and clothes with pen tool, used Color Balance adjustment layer to get a base camo-green. Used similar green for the eyes.
11. Backtracked a little bit, selected the guy and made a new layer via copy so that I could work on the background separately.
12 - 30ish... Since it's been so long since I've done a challenge, I kind of forgot to keep track of what I was doing.
I redid the background by adding a layer between the GI guy and the original image - Render>Clouds and set it to to luminosity blend mode at about 40% opacity.
Using the techniques in Katrin's book, I punched up his eyes - I decided to go with red hair and green eyes, like mine. Just for the heck of it.
I fiddled with the skin tones and clothing colors using various adjustment layers - hue/saturation and color balance, primarily. I added some pink to his lips and cheeks and made the little medallion thing a golden yellow by painting using an airbrush set to various opacities.
Finally, I flattened the image, used unsharp mask at 100%, and added a tiny bit of noise to make the background and foreground a bit more unified.
