Here is my atempt at photo retouching.

I think the biggest challenge with colorizing mages is to keep them form looking pastey. If you can make them look as natural as posible the bettler unless your after a kim anderson look.

Ok here is shat I did:
First I did a photo restore to clean up the original before doing any kind of coloring, I did some cloning mostly then I boosted the contrast with levels and unsharp masking,
Next I masked out the different areas I was going to be coloring (jacket, skintones, background), I just made some quickmasks and saved them as selections to use when I was ready..
I colored the background using a adjustment layer with hue/saturation and just changed it to soming pleasing ( I could of did some extra things to the background but didn't want to get carried away).
Next I SLIGHTLY changed the color of the jacket and hat they had that military look to them already. I masked the pin on the hat and performed a bright/contrast on it to make it shine more.
NOw for the harder part the face. To keep the more natural look I found an old picture of my son and took his face and distorted it to fit roughly onto the old face, did some cloning to fit better, erased the unneeded areas then I set the layer to "color" this gave me the highlights and variences I was after ( this layer by itself looked like a blob but once turned to color was great).
I did some selective burning and dodging to the photo to help with contrast and details, flattened and did a unsharp mask on the final to just touch up the detail slighly.... DONE!

as usual with me I am trying to race the clock and keep all my progjects to less than 4 hours and this one come in at 4.25 hrs.

used photoshop 7.0

Thanks fo looking..

Awesome job, probably the best I've seen on this one.

Well this feedback is rather belated - but I have to say - REALLY nice. Beautifully subtle shading, really delicate touch.
