This might very well be the most damaged Challenge image ever. But I wouldn't post an impossible Challenge. This has all the information necessary for a wonderful image. But it will be a Torture Test 
Challenge: Restore this photo
Do your best to restore "Torture Test", and post the results here using the following guidelines:
- Make sure you're using the largest version of the Challenge photo
- Enter your name in "Enter a title for the photo"
- Enter the Challenge type and number in "Descriptive Keywords" (ie: "Photo-Art Challenge #501" or "Manipulation Challenge #132"
- Include a complete description of the steps you used under "Photo Description". (You might want to write it elsewhere and paste it here)
- Attach your file as an 800 pixel wide JPG file, compressed so that the overall file is under 200k (this usually means 60% compression).
- Make sure you post to the correct Challenge
- If you expect any comments for your entry, offer your comments to other entries
As always, there are no winners, no losers, no prizes, only a sharing and learning opportunity for everyone.
How you restore and how much you restore is up to you, as long as you fulfill the Challenge. Have fun, and good luck!

I should note that there are 2 people in this shot, a woman and a child.

I certainly don't wish to sound negative . . . but it seems to me that this is not a restorable image (at least not without viewing other existing pictures of the subjects and even then using a lot of imagination). Seeing there is no clear photographic data of the lady or child, any attempt would merely be a guess of what the restorer "wishes" it should look like. What makes up a face is individual features. In this image, they simply don't exist.
Would "any" end result made by people who have no clue what this woman and child should look like, be considered a restore? Could you look at it and say "yes, that's my great grandmother and grandfather in that picture, don't they look wonderful?".
Just a thought

I agree with you lqqker, but as these are challenges to help us improve and showcase our skills, a little leeway is necessary. In a real job, perhaps there would be other pictures of the people in question from which to take features and shapes, or a family memeber who could say "a little less nose or mouth". This type of restoration would scare off a lot of people, but perhaps learning from this challenge will cause someone out there to take one on.

I don't think so. There is not enough image data to even make an intelligent guess at the woman's and child's facial features. I have found no way to get data out of the cracks and fog in this picture. Any attempt would be an artist's rendition rather than a restore. I agree with LQQKER and dcarr. I think Phyllis has the right idea. I should have never started on this challenge. I lay awake nights just trying to think of ways to work on this picture.
