I gave myself 4 hours to see what I could do and here is what I got..

First I recropped and cleaned up with scratch and dust removal. Next I recreated the background and frame giving then some texture by adding some noise. The frame was given a pillow emboss to give it some definition.
I then did a levels correction on a dupicate layer and assigned that layer " BURN". I masked out best I could the people and applied a vignetted background to replace the dameaged. Now it was back to the time comsuming retouching, I cleaned up as much as I could figure out and winged some parts but TIMES up..... I flattened did some more noise and a slight unsharp mask, desaturated slightly and Finny. I think I put enough time into the torture, If this was a real job I probably did some cuting and pasting from other Photos to get the eyes, nose, mouth and hair better as you can tell there just wasn't much to work with..

Thanks for looking...

Dale

hey dale

it was a job, wasn't it? i like how you did her eyes and mouth. it will be fun to see what everyone else comes up with since it's so bad, you have to invent them to a certain extent. especially fun to wonder it either would recognize themselves in our work . . .

Great work Dale, I'm working on this challenge right now and it's a really tough one to pull detail from.

Great job! This was an incredibly difficult image to manipulate, and you've done a wonderful job of smoothing and cleaning an almost impossible piece. Wonderful work!

It's a little dark still Dale. You have cleaned it up well, though I am not convinced by the bathing hat/skullcap on the child, I think it is the same harsh light that is apparent on the mothers head.

Lovely job on smoothing the facial and skin tones and using the light and dark areas to map out the features.

I'd like to see a lighter version. This one looks very dark, but it looks like you've done a excellent job on it. You've shown personalities on both the mother and child.
