T, Wow, this is beautiful!! Wonderful sketching, shading ability. I LOVE how you have it cropped. I have always admired portraits done by artists, here's another one to admire. Is this a self portrait? Can't wait for your next one

Very pleasant smile and expresive eyes. The skin tone looks good. The image makes you want to smile --- it just feels good - nice person, freindly. You have captured so much in her face!

Thanks for all the extremely kind comments. I figured with all the advice and tutorial links that I had been giving Jack that I needed to try sketching a portrait myself. This was my second attempt in Painter. The first one was a bit scary, but you have to start somewhere. I used the grid option this time to help keep the elements in better proportion, and that help out a lot. This was about 2 1/2 hours of work.
As for it being a self portrait... kind of maybe. I really just started sketching. I used a magazine photo for a reference for some subtle details, but overall it's pretty close to how I look so I guess subconsciously I was using myself as a reference. I am still not happy with the eye lashes, but I figured that I had worked on it long enough and they were a good stopping point. Perhaps by portrait 3 I will figure out how to better duplicate them.
Thanks again for the compliments,
~T

Really great self-portrait. My second try on Painter is nowhere near this. If I use Painter for a year I will never be where you are right now.

That is extremely kind of you Tony. Painter has a lot of capabilities that I don't even know how to use yet. I have only experimented with the basics. One of these days I will try and devote some real time to the program as it looks very promising. Thanks again for the kind words!

T Paul....Really great. The nose is perfect and the definition on the overall face is sweat. Eyebrow and lashes natural. I really like your submission.

Thanks Phyllis and Jean! I like the hair and nose best. Noses can be so hard to make look realistic and I was very happy with how this one turned out.

Very nice T
You have the shading done quite well on the face. Just a suggestion, you may try some shading on the whites of the eyes (near the edges), to keep them from looking flat. Also a bit of shading around the outside of the eye would seem logical as well (most eyes have slightly different tones here). The eye lashes could be fuller and not quite as uniform in length as with the eyebrows (something for the imagination). But keep in mind, this is a "very" good job. I think you've done the most difficult portion of a portrait quite well, the shading and facial proportions.

Thanks. I agree 100% about the eyes. I plan on redoing them. They were my last element to develop in the image and I didn't refine them as much as I should, but I wanted a stopping point. I hope to improve upon them in my next version. The eye lashes will take some practice yet, as I still haven't made any I like. Thanks for the great tips!
