Our last Photo-Art Challenge allowed unfettered imagination and style. This one doesn't

Perhaps to underscore that fine photography is also an art, or perhaps just because I have a mean streak, this Challenge is more technical. But that doesn't mean the results shouldn't be creative and artistic.

So, here's the idea: using no controls other than tonal controls (that is, burning and dodging), turn this pretty-enough travel snap into a beautiful, stirring work of art. You can use whatever tonal controls you like (burn/dodge tools, layers, etc.), but don't add or subtract anything at all from the image (ie: no painting, filters, collage, etc.).

This should be old hat for you photographers, but I suspect there will be a very wide range of results.

Challenge: Turn this into an artistic photograph by only altering its tonal values

Post the results here using the following guidelines:
  • Make sure you're using the largest version of the Challenge photo
  • Enter your name in "Enter a title for the photo"
  • Enter the Challenge type and number in "Descriptive Keywords" (ie: "Photo-Art Challenge #501" or "Manipulation Challenge #132"
  • Include a complete description of the steps you used under "Photo Description". (You might want to write it elsewhere and paste it here)
  • Attach your file as an 800 pixel wide JPG file, compressed so that the overall file is under 200k (this usually means 60% compression).
  • Make sure you post to the correct Challenge
  • If you expect any comments for your entry, offer your comments to other entries

As always, there are no winners, no losers, no prizes, only a sharing and learning opportunity for everyone.

How you retouch and how much you retouch is up to you, as long as you fulfill the Challenge. Have fun, and good luck!

NOTE: As is the case for ALL RetouchPRO Challenges, there is NO expiration date on this Challenge. Even after other Challenges go up, feel free to upload your version

Doug, please give us more specific instructions. Is it JUST the burn and dodge tools along with layer blend modes that we may use? Or are other "tonal controls" allowed? I understand "no filters" are allowed, but what about "brightness/contrast" and other such adjustments? Finally, may we do anything with COLOR adjustments?
