basically just a lot of experimenting with different colors and a lot of time with details, numerous layers and a low opacity soft brush on most of the work - i liked the darker background because it seemed to bring out her face a little more and i noticed that coloring between the beads seemed to help keep it from looking so flat
Great contrast from front to back... background is clearly in the "background".. great colors...I like your interpretation of this photo. Great job!

I like the result. The background and costume colors are great. However, the skin tones look a bit off to me and I still see gray hair between bead work over forehead.

Thank you both. I realized after I posted that I'd lost one of my 'layers' somewhere along the point that included some color details. Looking at it now, I think the skin has too much of a yelllowish cast as well and the background is too dark. Oh well, this was a good learning exercise for me just to remind me how important it is to 'put it away and come back later' when I've had my nose (or eyes) in it for so long
