This is my first submission to RetouchPro, a wonderful Internet site. This challenge caught my attention because I love Edward Curtis' photos and my wife works with American Indians in this region.
I used PS 7. For me, this was an exercise in selection. I made an alpha channel for each color, using the pen tool to select the objects for that color. In cases where an object was adjacent to an object already done, I overlapped selections then subtracted the selection already done in order to get a clean edge.
I then colorized each channel using color blend mode and varying opacity until I liked the effect.
In some cases, I varied the brightness of the original photo to create more even color or lighten areas.
I will be interested to hear what my wife's clients think of the color choices.
I did disobey orders and retouched the background. Sorry, but I couldn't resist.
This project took me quite awhile. There has to be a faster way! Any suggestions would be much apprectiated.

A very nice retouch. I agree with you that the background needs to be colored for completeness. I can't imagine a fast way of doing this project.
