I am still in the learning mode. This effort is an experiment using some of the techniques I am learning from Dan Margulis' book "Photoshop Professionals". Any mistakes in implementation are my own.
After loading the picture, I assigned WideGamutRGB to get some color. I saved a copy and then converted to CMYK using a medium GCR. I then performed heavy Unsharp filtering on the Black channel (500%,0.5 Radius,0 Threshold, and not quite so heavy on the Cyan channel (135%, 0.5, 3).
I then loaded the RGB copy I made earlier and replace the poor Magenta channel in my CMYK version with the Green from the RGB version and replaced the Yellow channel with the Blue from the RGB. I wanted to improve the detail of the lettering on the wall, so I copied the Yellow channel, made a new layer and pasted the Yellow into the new layer. I used Find Edges filter and then blended the layer using Linear Burn. I added a mask to this layer and hid all but the lettering on the wall and some other detail - like the flowers, and the engraving. At this point I felt the picture lacked punch so I added a layer and applied the Cyan layer. I used a luminosity blend for the layer. At this point, I adjusted the color a little with a set of curves.

Thanks for your comments. I hope to get time to work on the ceiling and post another attempt in a few days.
