I have been experimenting with the Color Range selections recently and decided to use this technique for this challenge.

I have to admit that I can't give a step-by-step description of my steps but I can say that I selected numerous times and aimed for the full range from highlites to shadows. Each selection would be copied into its own layer. I then would use both the Layer blends and Hue/Saturation to effect an interesting change to each layer as I progressed. Couldn't duplicate it exactly again if I tried, but I could get another interesting set of tones and hues.
