My first attempt was still a little pink, so I tried again…
1. Rotated image to make the door frame level and cropped out distracting elements
2. Levels adjustment. Used the black phone for the black eyedropper sample and the white dress for the white dropper sample
3. Curves adjustment. Selected the red channel and reduced the red cast in the photo. Switched to RGB channel and increased the black a little to make the photo more vivid.
4. Hue & Saturation Adjustment. Increase saturation by 8.
5. Applied USM
6. Image still had lots of little red and blue dots so I applied dust & scratches filter and took a snapshot. I switched back to the state before the filter was applied and used the history brush to soften any areas that needed it.
7. Used the healing brush to remove the blue strip down her dress.
8. Selected color range, highlights. Then used the curves adjustment to correct the blown out dress by reducing the highlights.
9. Added some catchlights to her eyes
10. Used the blur tool to soften the image
11. Image was still a little pink so adjusted by the numbers with curves and then ran AutoColor

Thanks Nicole. It is a bit degraded due to all the adjustments. A bit of hand coloring should be the next step and that would increase the color and smooth out the remaining rough spots.

This is very nice also. It could use a little more color, but you already stated that.

I think that croping is perfect. It is balancing very well and very nice to experience it....

I had pretty much missed the light blue line and had to go back to my copy to see it.
Well done on both versions.

I don't know who's mom would be proud but remembering the days of that time (50's - 60's) I can see you did a lot to restore the photo. Lovely looking lady too. I never could get my mother to pose like that. Someone said this needed color has anyone tried to colorize black and white photo's? I'm having the time of my life looking at what others have already achieved with this program.
