"This photo (circa 1910) belongs to a friend who has kindly given permission for me to use it in any way I wish. It is a photo of her grandparents taken in Perth, Scotland. As a newbie to restoration I tackled this photo but it was a real challenge for me. Leaving it uncoloured was not an option for me. For anyone wishing to colourise I've provided some background information below and attached a Black Watch tartan sample for the kilt.
Research from the net provided me with a little information about regimental colours (The Black Watch) worn at the time (? circa 1910). A friend supplied the photo and confirmed her grandmother's dress was chocolate brown. The soldier's hose (black and red checks) I confirmed after finding fine art prints on the net. Whether his hose were those colours cannot be seen from the original photo. I have seen other old prints where the socks were just a plain green. However in conjunction with the red jacket the checked hose appears on old prints together with a red jacket.
I'd be very grateful and interested to see how others would tackle this restoration. It is one I believe that one day I will attempt again when I have learned much more. The white mark above the two stripes on his left arm is not an insignia - I made the mistake of leaving it alone when it should have been repaired. Many thanks in anticipation."
Challenge: Restore and colorize using included swatch and color instructions
Do your best to restore "Regimental Colours", and post the results here using the following guidelines:
- Make sure you're using the largest version of the Challenge photo
- Enter your name in "Enter a title for the photo"
- Enter the Challenge type and number in "Descriptive Keywords" (ie: "Photo-Art Challenge #501" or "Manipulation Challenge #132"
- Include a complete description of the steps you used under "Photo Description". (You might want to write it elsewhere and paste it here)
- Attach your file as an 800 pixel wide JPG file, compressed so that the overall file is under 200k (this usually means 60% compression).
- Make sure you post to the correct Challenge
- If you expect any comments for your entry, offer your comments to other entries
As always, there are no winners, no losers, no prizes, only a sharing and learning opportunity for everyone.
How you restore and how much you restore is up to you, as long as you fulfill the Challenge. Have fun, and good luck!
NOTE: As is the case for ALL RetouchPRO Challenges, there is NO expiration date on this Challenge. Even after other Challenges go up, feel free to upload your version

As the submitter of this (as Jade) I'd like to extend my grateful thanks and appreciation for all the mighty efforts posted by everyone. They are simply amazing results for a very difficult restoration and colourisation. Thanks Doug too
for posting it as I've learned a lot in the process viewing how everyone tackled this difficult task.
A year later it's time I tackled this one again. However my colourising skills leave something to be desired... still!
------------------------------ Cheers
Pauline
