Submitted by Mike Fowler.
"I would like to submit the attached photo as a restoration challenge. It is an old family photograph that is badly faded, distorted, and scratched. I have been trying to restore this photo to its original condition for a long time with no luck. I believe it may be un-restorable, but if someone wants a real challenge, this one is for them.
Good luck & Thank you,
Mike Fowler"
Challenge: Restore the un-restorable
Do your best to restore "Un-restorable?", and post the results here using the following guidelines:
- Make sure you're using the largest version of the Challenge photo
- Enter your name in "Enter a title for the photo"
- Enter the Challenge type and number in "Descriptive Keywords" (ie: "Photo-Art Challenge #501" or "Manipulation Challenge #132"
- Include a complete description of the steps you used under "Photo Description". (You might want to write it elsewhere and paste it here)
- Attach your file as an 800 pixel wide JPG file, compressed so that the overall file is under 200k (this usually means 60% compression).
- Make sure you post to the correct Challenge
- If you expect any comments for your entry, offer your comments to other entries
As always, there are no winners, no losers, no prizes, only a sharing and learning opportunity for everyone.
How you restore and how much you restore is up to you, as long as you fulfill the Challenge. Have fun, and good luck!
NOTE: As is the case for ALL RetouchPRO Challenges, there is NO expiration date on this Challenge. Even after other Challenges go up, feel free to upload your version

30 min fix-up.
Challenge: Restore the un-restorable
I just made several layers, building up colour and texture of photo using mainly the overlay merge and mulitply merge. Then I removed the very obvious faults using clone, patches, and healing tool. Merged all layers. then selected over and under exposed areas with the lasso with a 20 feather, and copy and pasted each area finding a merge that would either lighten or darken it. I merged all again, and made more layers slowly building up the colour again.
I was going to "fix up" the photo, but wondered where I would stop, and thought well it is an old photo, it should look like one, so decided to stay at a place where you could see the photo pretty clearly, compared to the original.
