I use gimp 1.2.3
1)rotated the image to straighten the image.
2)Made selections for carpet,mom,tree and the remaining.
3)Used levels and curves on individual selections.
4)Removed all the distracting things, including phone!
5)Did a sobel edge detect on mom selection and used it as selection for unsharp mask.
6)did unsharp mask on entire tree.
7)Added yellow for mid-tones.

The only problem I see is that Mom in the foreground is darker than the stuff under the tree. I would adjust the contrast on her alone to elevate the bright whites. I do like how you got rid of the rug and some of the distractions around her though. Good work.
