1. Set marquee to Constrained Aspect Ratio at 7x5 and cropped image to center man & woman, remove extraneous areas and make the finished image size fit a standard frame.

2. Used eyedroppers on a Levels adjustment layer to set the white point, black point and a neutral tone, (in the sleeve of the man's suit). Slid midtones down a bit; flattened image.

3. Duplicated Background layer; in History palette, took New Snapshot named AfterLevels. Ran Noise>Dust & Scratches filter with Radius set to 5 and Threshold to 9. Took new snapshot named D&S. Made After Levels the active snapshot and D&S the source. Painted over the clothes of the the people and larger areas of skin, leaving features untouched. This removed most of the small scratches without blurring too much detail. (I also tried clearing up the house and windows this way, but didn't like the results and decided to remove the people from the background rather than repair that damage, especially since it seemed a portrait look was what was wanted.)

4. Cloned, dodged and burned to remove larger scratches and uneven areas, to clarify woman's eyes and mouth and repair her right arm. Also made selections of good portions of man's suit and woman's dress to cover largest scratches and to give him another button on his vest.

5. Used Quickmask to isolate the subjects; cleaned up the mask and blurred it slightly.

6. Made a new background by selecting a light gray and white as foreground & background colors; ran Filter>Render>Render Clouds a few times, added some noise and blurred a bit for the background.

7. Made new layer and used big airbrush and black to paint some shadows behind the subjects.

8. Made vignette and added black layer behind all.

I tried various ways of sharpening the edges and the whole photo, but didn't much like the results so I left it soft.

Very well done Suzanne,
And you've given a great description
of your restoration methods.
I cant think of any helpful comments,
because you've done such a good job.
Any further retouch work on the faces
and you could loose the look of the original.
Thanks for your comments on my retouches.

You have done a lovely job on this one Suzanne. This wasn't an easy photo to work with but you still managed to clean it up beautifully. I am also very impressed with your detailed description of the steps you took to acheive the result.

Faces look good and I agree that the background works better the way you have done it. Very nice work.

Great decision to rescue Grandpa and Grandma from that snapshot and turn it into an excellant portait. I also appreciate your detailed description.
