I learned a lot about what didn't work. The most important lesson I learned from this--make lots of duplicate layers as you go. It makes it easier to backtrack.

Well learning is what is so great about this site! Also excellent point about making duplicate layers as they are a great way to try different things without losing any previous work. Some times you do have to go backwards in order to go forwards (grin).

You did a good job of eliminating a lot of the clutter from the original photo by removing the subjects and placing them on a new background. The new background might be a bit strong when compared to the people though. You might try putting a layer of white between the people and the background and then lowering the opacity until you have a softer looking background. It also might be fun to experiment with the blur filter and see what kinds of backgrounds you can come up with. Nicely done!
