Well, this is try #2 - I think the color's a bit better, but don't know if it's much sharper than the other. As with the previous, I'm using Corel Photopaint...
1) Image/Auto Equalize
2) Image/Adjust/Sample-Target Balance: chose lower left corner "dark area" and resampled to black. Chose a "grey" area on the lower left flower and moved sample area "to the left" in the color palette to go from green-grey to grey, chose a "highlight" area that was greenish-white and moved it to a more pure white color
3) adjusted discolored areas with the clone tool
4) created new layer and desaturated it; Image/Adjust/Contrast Enhancement till highlights were fairly blown out and shadows were very dark
5) performed a 100% Smart Blur on the greyscale layer, then ran a Find Edges at 100%
6) copied this layer to a new file and re-ran contrast enhancement removing more greyscale levels. Re-ran smart blur smoothing levels again. Made a new layer from background and inverted this layer.
7) went back to original file, created a new layer from the background and created a clipmask. Copied the "black background, white edges" version from the other file into the clipmask.
8) Ran unsharp mask on this layer with a radius of 20 @ 200%/0 threshold
9) created new layer from background, created a clipmask, and copied the "white background, black edges" version from the other file into the clipmask
10) ran unsharp mask on this layer
11) copied this layer and ran a smart blur on it and reduced transparency to 50%
12) flattened image and smoothed out some harsh pixels

Very beautiful color. I think it paid off to have another go at it. Your description is fantastic. Sure wish others would take notice of your detailed description.
