i decided to try a colorized version. i have studiously avoided colorizing to this point, but couldn't resist trying this.
made selections of face, hair, eyes, lips, eye whites and t shirt and using color blend mode filled with color, adjusting with hue sat til i liked it.
i know i did some airbrush layers, blurring, smudging and filmgraining, but don't know order or settings.
did a soft light copy layer @ low opacity.
that's about it. enjoyed doing it, thanks for the idea matt.

Kathleen this is great, it’s perfectly framed.
For someone who was a bit reticent to use color
you have done a terrific job here. Getting natural
hair color is hard, and skin color is much, much harder.
At least for me it is.
Good choice of color for the frame.
The outer brown and inner black really
focus your eyes on the face. Far better than any
color scheme I could have come up with.

she had such a compelling face to me, so innocent and grave and thoughtful.

Well kathleen --- you are now on your way! And what a great start. I love doing color. This came out very well and I would NEVER have guessed it was your first. Great job.

Kathleen, this looks fantastic. She looks very modern and you didn't lose her original features. Very nice work.
