Taking care of the Cracks

1. I first selected the side of the house in sections and applied a slight gaussian blur to reduce the depth of the cracks. I then used a 16% grayscale color @ 100% opacity, soft brush to paint the house, gate and adjoining structure. The geometry of the layout caused me some aspect problems but decided on the displayed approach and maintained those lines as best as possible.

2. I copied the left most window along with all of its cracks onto the right most. Adding some lines to the blinds in the back ground use the brush tool and again maintaining an opacity of 100% with a soft brush. In addition, I painted in the window frames and shadows trying not to disguise all of the imperfects of shadows but trying to "mask" the perverse damage as well as possible.

3. On the individuals I used the patch, clone and smudge tool for repair of the cracks on their clothing. The face of the daughter...I cloned material from the "father's" face to fill in the cracks and maintain like texture. I use the brush tool with a 20% CMYK grayscale to line in the designs on the daughter's dress....

4. I attempted to use the embossing filter on the individuals but it really accentuated the blotches on the skin and I did not have enough "clean" skin to conduct a full fledged cloning.

I am glad I came across your web site. I have found the book by Katrin Eismann most helpful in my getting started in repairing old pictures. Katrin mentions your web site and so by golly here I am...

Thanks for your time..

PS...I will try and get better at recording the processes/steps I go through as I take up the a new challenge.

I think you did a very good job at the description. More than most. You also did an excellent job with this difficult challenge. I think the only thing I would do is to increase the contrast in the image a bit. Excellent work.

DJ, I certainly appreciate your thoughts. This picture (original) is quite a piece of work but it is the type of project I really enjoy.

Thanks again
