This is my first restoration and WOW what a hard one!
I used mostly airbrush tool with a soft brush. Setting near opacity: 20 - flow: 20 in normal mode.
When i used clone tool i used just about the same setting as i did when painting.
1. duplicate layer
2. add new painting layer
3. airbrush, airbrush, clone, airbrush, airbrush, airbrush.
4. airbrush some more..
5. curse'n'swear
6. airbrush some more
7. apply noise filter to painting layer
8. merge down
9. cheer myself
10. apply dust'n'scratch filter
11. crop image
12. do the "WOOOT" dance

You picked a doozy for a first but you did an awesome job. The only tell tale sign you left was a little blurring on his striped shirt but the rest of the image is fantastic. Good job of cropping. That can save alot of work.
