I enjoyed working on this portrait. I tried hard to retain the look of the original. When I decided to add a touch of color, I made an effort to use subdued colors. (A first for a heavy-handed re-toucher such as I).

Trying to create a complimentary background to this portrait looked tough-going. I selected the background and used a Retouch Pro tutorial (wall restoration), also used it on the skirt. Then I used a circular gradient fill with blend set to color.

Skin tones – I selected the hands and face and sampled the skin tones of a lady in another photo. With the paintbrush –opacity 30 – blend mode set to color I painted in the new skin tones. I only hope I came close to Henrietta’s real skin tones.

I left the white blown out top till last. I was going to repair it.
But I started to like the top. I felt along with the background it helped make
Henrietta a little more striking to the eye.

I also intended doing something about the carpet, it was a mess.
But when I added my colored background I decided to keep it.
I wanted the photo to have an aged look and nothing looks more aged than that carpet!

I apologize to other members for the lack of detail in my description. I am a tinkerer, I try to do this, do that, undo, do this, do that, undo, et cetera. By the time I get what I feel is an acceptable result, I can’t remember how I did it.

I think this is one of your best jobs yet. Every aspect of restoration and colorization is extremely well done.

OOOh! I Love it! I can't wait to show it to my Dad! She is his grandmother. I believe you have captured her face perfectly. She looks like my oldest aunt whom everyone says favors Henretta! Beautiful Job!

Thanks Paulie, TwinbNJ,Nalty sr and Pixeltickler
for your kind comments.

Diane, I was at a loss how to do the blouse.
It was blown out and the top badly damaged.
I could swear Henrietta was wearing a long pearl necklace. But it would be a brave restorer who would do white pearls against a white blouse.

It's interesting to look at the three color restorations of Henrietta's blouse.
All are quite different.
