duplicated background

Filter,Pixelate,Mosaic,32 pixel squares (to make thread same color for each "stitch")

made a 32x32 pixel .psd file contining a white painted cross (45 deg lines)(to represent the thread), plus thinner grey lines at center horizontal and center vertical (to represent the fabric); on black background. Also painted thin grey diagonal lines on the "threads" to show twist, and shadows on the lower thread, to show they're crossing. Blurred these twist lines and crossing shadows c gaussian blur.

applied stitch texture to mosaiced background via Filter,Texturize

made new layer and filled with stitch texture (Edit,Fill,Pattern), set to overlay (darkened parts of photo not corresponding with stitches). Had to play around with levels in this layer to keep overlay from being too dark.

bumped color saturation and played with curves until picture tonally resembled original (sort of).

Sorry the file is larger than 200K; I used max jpeg compression and it still wouldn't go down (prob b/c few areas of confluent colors).

Outstanding! I tried this as my first attempt but couldn't get it looking anywhere near so good!

This looks like real cross-stitch close up. I'm impressed...going to put aside the real needle and thread for photoshops virtual ones.

Very clever, what a joy to view....x-stitching is a favourite pastime of mines!
