I thought I'd try to keep the image's shape rather than make it part of another image, so I imagined it as a book-cover.
The first step was to delete the black background. So I opened it in Corel Photopaint turned the image into an Object, masked and then deleted the black surround, I kept the black eye sockets etc - I thought it looked more gothic that way :o)
I saved the mask as an alpha channel for later use.
My next job was to search for a new background.
At the bottom of the stack of objects there is an image of a path through a bluebell wood.
Next up is one of a woman in the desert with a silk-like banner that gives her 'wings'. This object has it's merge mode set to Invert and is 85% transparent.
Next up is the image of the shadow of a tree. It has been flipped, it's merge mode set to multiply and it's 49% transparent.
Then comes a patch of grass. It's 39% transparent and it's merge mode is soft light.
Above that I set an empty object, activated the channel I'd saved earlier, and used Eye Candy to make some smoke. This object has no transparency applied to it and the merge mode is set to normal.
Next up is the first of three copies of the skull. It's merge mode is set to overlay and it has no transparency applied to it.
The object above that is some black text set in 'Cloister Black' on a spiral that I created in Corel Draw and then applied some perspective to it. I simply opened it in PhotoPaint and dragged it on to the image. I applied no transparency to it and set it's merge mode to soft light.
Above that is the second instance of the skull. It has been distorted and it's merge mode set to overlay and, again, no transparency applied to it.
Next up is a copy of the text offset from the previous text, it is 50% transparent with the merge mode set to overlay.
Finally the topmost object is the third skull. It's 28% transparent and it's merge mode is set to hard light.
Er.. as for the words, erm, nothing more exotic than dummy text. No eldritch verse, I don't know any :o)

WOW! Just plain and simple...WOW. Although the subject matter is a little disturbing, the technique and final effect are stupendous.

Thanks for the comments, I guess the subject matter is a little disturbing - the funny thing is that the underlying images are really rather pleasant :o)
