I felt I had to make a few adjustments to give the photo a more balanced and pleasing appearance before I sharpened and colored.
The big radio behind the man’s head was distracting so I removed it.
I wanted to retain the original wallpaper and couch pattern so I expanded the patterns with the clone tool.
I shrank the man’s bloated hand, lowered his trouser leg and gave a more natural curve to the lady’s arm.
I used multiply to hit the blown out areas of the faces and shirt to try to return detail. It helped. Removed the small white specks with dust and scratches and toned selected areas of the photo.
Then came the laborious job of selecting and coloring. Used Hue & sat. and channel mixer to add color and levels to fine tune.

Pretty slick Matt. Nice colors and alot sharper. You even cleaned the apartment, mended her stockings and pulled up his socks.

Thanks Doug, your comments brought a big smile to my face.
I tend to be meticulous straightening backgrounds in photos.
But you should see my apartment. Books, magazines and other clutter are everywhere. I'm a messy person.
Gee, this challenge is a puzzle to me.
Morleyuwm and I came in early on this retouch
but a week has gone by and none of the members
have done this one. I thought there would be at
least half a dozen retouches by now.

You have done such a great job. I particularly like the way you smoothen the faces. Wow
