My goal with this photo was to try to produce a natural looking image that doesn’t look painted. I spent a lot of time on the man’s face, mostly in the chin, mouth and nose areas.
Of course, like everybody else I did a lot of stamping and cloning to repair the cracks. Another technique I used was to create a copy of the image and blur it so that most of the fine scratches no longer showed. I put this copy below the working copy of the image. Next I added an all black mask to the working image. By painting the mask with a white brush set to 25 percent opacity, I selectively allowed the blur to show. I avoided the areas that want to keep sharp.
To do the curtain I cleaned up a small patch a using the stamp and healing brush. I used the rectangular marquee tool to select the clean area and made several new layers from the selection. I fit them together, merged them into one and placed them behind a layer with just the subjects.
To create the shadow I made a copy of the subject layer and place it between the new curtain and the original subject layer. I reduced the saturation and brightness of the shadow layer to produce a black silhouette of the happy couple. I added both motion and gaussian blur to the shadow, reduced its opacity and positioned it so that it looked right. This method gave me more control than the drop shadow method.
The grooms ear gave me a fit, so I pasted in an ear from another image and adjusted color and size to fit.
As a final step I reduced the image size and sharpened it a bit using unsharp mask.

Excellent detail, levels and coloring on the faces. You did a really good job giving them some depth with your shadow. Was going to suggest toning down the shine on the faces but I think it sort of enhances the three dimensional look.

Thank you Doug. I agree the shine is almost too much. It wasn’t so pronounced when viewing it in PS. before converting it to JPEG
