I couldn’t see much help in channels.
I went with the lightness channel in lab color.
Used multiply to try to bring back some detail.

I expanded the frame and gave it a light brown tint.
For the background I found noise and gradient looked too new.
So I tried to make a battered old background
that would look as old as the frame and Cadet.

Then came a lot of work cloning and using the Patch Tool.
Also used the dodge and burn tools to fill and even patchy areas.
Tried hard to keep everything looking old and worn.

You did a nice job maintaining the look of an old photo. I also struggled with the treatment of the background. I like what you did.

Like the rough texture. Face and ears and contrast look really good. Definately has that authentic old feel!

Morley and Doug,

Sorry to take so long to thank you for your comments.
I have been locked out of Retouch for the last week with a syntax error.

I enjoyed working on this challenge.
But it took time to get the background and frame in harmony with the cadet.
At least I hope I did to some extent.
