Photoshop 7'd!

This one was fun!

For the sign itself:
I found a reference shot online

From that, I recreated some realistic weathering and damage using Cloning and the Grain filter with Clumped grain.

I've gotten into a little habit which I recommend highly. Following nearly every filter I apply, I "back off" the filter a little with the Fade command (CTRL+SHIFT+F). This is a powerful feature that gives you a huge amount of control over the intensity of any given filter. (Especially considering the awful little preview window that most filters use!)

I added a little yellow trim around the sign using the Border Selection command.

Then, using airbrushes of various intensities, shapes, and sizes, I painted out the lettering and added some of my own. I thought it was a cute idea.

Finally, after creating a little wooden post (Just drew a brown rectangle, used Add Noise, and did a vertical motion blur for wood grain) I tweaked the perspective of the sign.

The background I just tossed in cause it was hard for me to leave just the blank sign…but as requested, I didn't do much work on the background, just a motion blur!

Very realistic looking. The fun you had with it comes through loud and clear!

The spray paint is a nice touch! Completely realistic. I would consider adding a bit of a motion blur to match the rest of the photo.
