First post here!
I enjoy restorations, but I've a long way to go! There is some terrific talent posting here! Any comment and critisicm welcome!

My steps (what I can remember) and not in order.
1. Fixed framewith copy and clone and a little colour for the edge of the mat.
2. Made layers of the cadet and background.
3. Replaced background with a texture overlay.
4. Copy cadet and multiply
5. Used clone, smudge at 3px, contrast enhancement, dodge and burn generally. Also to balance the colouring on the cheeks and shade the jawbone a little.
6. Fixed hat band by toning, smudging and adding back grain.
7. Went overboard on the badge and had to tone it down, still and odd colour.
8. Touched up eyes with desaturation and dodge.
9. A little bit of sharpening tool to lift it.
10. And forgot the golden rule to finish with a bit of USM.

I use PhotoImpact, so apart from the cloning tool, the smudge tool at pixel level is as close as I can get to a healing brush.

This is nice work Mark. I don’t believe that the lack of USM is a problem. I like your choice of background. It goes well with the rest of the image. Knowing when to stop (or back up, as in the case of the badge) is a good thing

Hello Morley, Thanks for your comments.
I've seen a little of your work -- great stuff!! Forgive me for not yet making comment, I don't feel qualified and my excuse is that my dial-up net connection has been snail-like the last couple of weeks. Takes ages to load a page.

Very nice restoration. Excellent facial details and subtle colouring.

Thank you Doug, I appreciate your comments. I'm always looking to improve, do you have any tips or criticisms?

I'm tempted to suggest that you stop posting pics that look better than mine. Your skill level is such that you will be disappointed if you expect much criticism here (this is kind of a fraternal forum with an emphasis on encouragement). I think you probably have the critical eye required to spot elements in the other submissions that might be improvements and to take advantage of descriptions, tutorials and resources that are available here and elsewhere. If you want more in depth critiques on your pics there is a forum here for that too.
