I found a great tutorial on the web on using the liquify command. By modifying it slightly, this is what I did.
1. Scanned a piece of aluminum foil for the dents and bents. 2. Turned off target layer (sign). 3. Went to channels and copied the channel with the best detail. 4. Added contrast and a gaussian blue to that channel. 5. Returned to RGB mode. 6. Returned to layers. 7. Turned on target layer. 8. Filter>Liquify 9. Chose the shift pixel tool, used the copied channel as a mask (freezer), painted until it looked ok then inverted mask and painted some more. Clicked ok and returned to layer palette. 10. Turned off target layer. 11. Went to background. 12 Channels and chose best channel. 13. Select>Select All. 14. Edit>Copy. 15. Back to RGB. 16. Back to Layer palette. 17. Turn on target layer. 18. Added two new layers above. Set top layer to multiply and the other to overlay. Pasted the copied channel in each of them.
It was necessary to tweak the color of the sign with hue/sat and use blending sliders to tone down the contrasty parts of the aluminum foil before I merged. After merging, I isolated the sign by cutting out the tin foil background and voila.
This challenge was a hoot to work with. Great job Doug. Thanks.

Great idea about the foil, would never have thought of that. Nice one Janet.
