This was so much fun to work on I did it twice (my computer crashed). Blue channel. Straightened cropped, and desaturated, then selected each soldier so I could adjust levels individually and get a more balanced tone. Did cleanup with clone, dodge and burn. Applied usm contrast enhance to heads only because I didn't like the effect on the uniforms.

Very impressive result, especially in removing the "sand".

Very nice job Doug:

I like how uniform you make the overall image in terms of tone and contrast (including the faces), the great cleanup of the background, and the sepia toning.

Thank you Marc, Alan, suchyy and Scott. Marc, I thought the 'sandstorm' was a cloud of cigar smoke. I'm assuming your great-grandfather is the dashing figure with the X? I left what appeared to be a scar on his right cheek which I'm sure is evidence of a sabre duel!

Great work Doug,

Extending the side of the photo with the cut off boot.
Seamlessly straightening the background and cropping
at the top and right side give this a superb balanced look.

Like Alan I think sepia is perfect for this photo.
