Funny challenge, indeed!
Here are my steps:
1. used PS extraction tool to remove most of the background, remaining spots killed with eraser
2. used repair- and stamp-tool to remove the "equipment" on the horse
3. borrowed an eye and the mouth of another horse and tried to fit them in place
4. got a new background
5. scaled down the horse a little to better fit into the scene

Nice job getting the reigns off of the horse. It's a good start.
However, the horse appears to be walking on the very top of the grass. Try pulling some blades over the hooves. The light in the background image you selected is very directional, try using a background photo which has flatter more even light, like the one the horse originated in. Also, the backgroung image appears to be distorted... sort of squished.

You're right in all points, thanks.
Could not find a better background in my archives... and I tried to put some grass over the hoves, but it looked even worse
Perhaps I should give it another try with a better BG.

One more thing to consider, would be placing the horse further away from the viewer.
I would imagine that you may be able to use the background selected currently... try lightening the horse making him feel more at home in this sunny setting. (placing the horse "further back" may help eleviate the problem of the horse lacking strong shadows)
