Cloned, copied and pasted, airbrushed, burned and dodged to remove most of overall damage.

Cloned iris and pupil of right eye onto left. Copied inner corner of right eye to new layer. Transformed that selection horizontal and then free transformed it to create inner corner of left eye. Whitened both eyes with dodge tool and used smudge, dodge and burn to define eyelids of both eyes. Used dodge tool to enhance glints in the eyes.

Copied various selections of right eyeglass and transformed those selections to form left eyeglass. Used top of frames from another photo of a pair of eyelgasses and pasted them in sections over original frames, free transformed sections to fit photo.

As I completed the work on the various separate layers, I merged them with the background layer and added noise to blend the retouched areas.

Level adjustments of Red: 31/1.32/255; Blue: 26/l.24/210; RGB: 30/.93/230. Adjustment layer set to 59% opacity.

Duplicated the restored layer, and ran the Polaroid Dust and Scatches Removal Filter on that copy. Set the new layer to Lighten Blend Mode to reduce amount of blurring. Erased eyes, nose, mouth and all other areas I wanted to retain the sharpness. Merged the two layers.

Cloned and Blurred background to soften that some more.

Selected original dress and copied to new layer. Used airbrush and smudge tools to created a new dress. Used sandstone and a “linen” texture that I had created. Didn’t do much with the necklace except to smooth it out and copy and paste good areas to replace damaged areas. Merged layers.

Increased yellow tones a little.

Added overall noise to final copy.

Thanks so much, Christine.

This was one difficult restoration for me. I would have liked to be able to get more of the spots out, but I lost too much clarity when I tried anything else.

Beautiful skin texture and coloring (nice hair color and bg too).

Wow what a fine retouch.
Good job on the eyes and glasses. So clean.
But what struck me most was the hair.
The fine detail work makes a world of difference.

Lorraine, in your description you mentioned that
You created a new dress using sandstone and linen texture.
I hope my monitors ok, but I can’t see any detail in the dress.
It just looks black to me.

Thank you, Doug and Matt.

Matt, regarding the texture in the dress -- it shows up more in the PSD file than in this .jpeg. I guess the compression has taken most of the detail out.

For the hair, I lightly smudged in some individual strands using the #3 brush, opacity of 97. Then I accentuated the highlights and shadows in the hair by using the dodge and burn tools with the size 35 brush set to a very low opacity for both.

I never got to see this Grt. Grandmother, she was gone before I was born. Now I can see some of the features she passed on to her son and his children. Lorraine you are my IDEAL I hope to be as good as you one day. Thanks to all who tried their hand on the repair of this great lady's portrait.

Thank you Aarius.

I really enjoyed working on the restoration. It's especially nice to have you comment on my work since this is your submission.
