first I leveled up the entire image. Then Desturated it for grey. Using the oval marke selected just white are. made it on seperate layer. Made another layer with a mask of the same cirle. Colored in the "white" area and blured just a smidge. Used the healing brush to make all the blemished go away. Took a little time to paint the whites of the eyes to make his eyes stand out and look more in focus. Then using the burn tool emphasized the brim. Then proceeded to colorize. Selecting what I wanted a different color and contrl j to make a copy of my selection on a new layer. Colorizing that layer and using the earser tool to fine tune the edges. Repeated that for all colors.

Excellent job of bringing out the details. It seems to have made a big difference in the way you handled his eyes. Real nice description as well.
