I'm a first time poster, so I hope I don't embarrass myself
First I downloaded a usable sky off the internet. I then selected and copied the bottom half of the boat image (along the skyline) to a new layer. I wasn't concerned about the masts or riggings in this step; I pretty much just cut straight across, following the stuff along the horizon.
I then placed the sky layer in between these two layers, giving me the original photo, then the sky on top of that, then my copied bottom half of the original image on the very top. I changed the sky layer's blending mode to multiply - this is what allowed the masts and riggings to adequately show through. I spent a little time tweaking the sky opacity and the top boat layer's cut-out skyline with some feathered selection and deletion. I then merged all layers down.
I altered the water a bit by increasing its contrast and brightness to minimize the original's gloomy look, and changed its color a little in the more highlighted areas at the sides, so as to suggest the bluer sky reflecting. I didn't want to overdue it, though, since it seemed real easy to make the water look incredibly fake. I basically just gave up on the water pretty quickly.
Finally, I tweaked the photo's overall color, bringing the process to a close after about two hours total. I have a relatively short attention span.
I hope you find it to be a satisfactory first effort.

Excellent piece of work, the rigging was the hardest section for most, and your solution was simple and elegant. Welcome to RP, I look forward to seeing more of your work in future.

In retrospect, though, I really didn't make the sky all that much bluer, did I?

I'm new here also.
It looks very realistic to me. You've balanced the overall photo coloring so well that I wouldn't know you put in a new sky.
Very nice work

Great job I like the way you kept all the rigging intact without trying to make selections.

Had I read this one before, my own try to keep the rigging intact would have been a tad more elegant too. Great work!
