Done in Corel Photopaint - Photoshop users can simply translate this into 'Shopspeak'
First off; remove the background, then increase the contrast in your favourite manner - either by levels, sample-target balance or just boost the contrast. Then create an Object (Layer in Shopspeak) from the background and then duplicate it. Turn the top image into a negative version (Image>Transform>Invert) Now change the merge mode (blend mode in Shopspeak) to Colour Dodge and then change the image to greyscale (ignore the warning to flatten the image). Now apply a gaussian blur to the top object - the greater the blur, the more the detail comes out, so this bit is a 'to taste' thing. There'll be a few other differences to the jargon here for Photoshop, but it'll be easy to figure out.
Good fun!

love the facial features showing through. Don't really like the big black glow around some other things.

Yeah, point taken about the black glow. My bad, I rather rushed through the job during a coffee break, and so didn't clean it up properly. Maybe I'll re-do the job when I get some time. I did have fun doing it though :o)

Sure looks like a sketch now - except I agree with the black glow comment.
Interesting technique, will have to try it out.
