I think this might fit more in line with what Doug commented on in his original post.

This file is in PNG format due to the fact it was 1/4th the size of the JPG (JPG not handling solid colors like this all too well without artifacting to hell and gone)

Converted this to greyscale, cutout the man and erased the area around him. I then put in a radial gradient behind him. After that, I "worked the magick" on the pic I'm leaving out the "magick" details at the moment to see if there's any interest in what I did.

Thanks, PJB! For me, the key to keeping detail in this one was to reduce the size before I started working on it, unlike most challenges where I work on the original-sized image and then resample down to 800px wide per Doug's instructions. When I tried that on this image, the downsampling just created a lot of greyscale artifacts that muddied up the image.

Thanks, Timbo! It was really a lot easier to do than you'd think I'll post more details later.

I love the "etch-tone" effect. It resembles the portraits used on American paper money. The moire generated in the thumbnails is some accidental fun, as well.

There appears to be some haloing, but with all the gymnastics you had to go through to upload it, that could be generated anywhere along the line.

Yeah, the moire effect on the gradient in the background was certainly not planned re: the haloing... do you mean the "blank" space around parts of the hat and the shoulders? I'm not sure what caused that as the gradient did hit the shoulders. Odds are that was an area of the clipmask (PS users read: layer mask) that I had not "erased" completely.

I must confess that I really didn't do much to this other than my clipmasking the man and removing the background and replacing it with the gradient. The etching, etc., was all done by a single pass through a filter.

This one was done with Flaming Pear's India Ink filter (www.flamingpear.com/indiaink.html) - I just d/l'd the demo and produced it via their interface. This was the "magick."

I know of two other filters that can accomplish similar effects - both can be found over at Andromeda's website (www.andromeda.com). The filters in question are the Series 3 Screens filter and the Cutline Filter (the Cutline is more like the effect you were wanting, Doug). And speaking of etching, take a look at their EtchTone filter. I'd link to the individual pages, but Andromeda uses frames, so i can't link to a particular page (and keep their site useful).

Hunter, the "haloing" is from the sharpen section of India Ink. I basically did the same thing as you, but couldn't upload.

This is a great pic, by the way!

JCH, I think Doug's fixed the upload issue - you might try uploading a PNG instead of a JPG on this one. And thanks for the kind words re: the pic!
