What a challenge, frustrating! I tried two other methods altogether
which included creating a brush to use as grain and another method
Using Flaming Pear Ghost Filter as a mask and applying Paintbrush/Dissolve/
Low opacity. I thought this would have merit but those grain/dissolve spots were
Just too big. ?
PSP8.01
I made a feather selection of the man and pasted into a new image, filled white.
Merged both layers after erasing parts unwanted. Buzz Simplifier applied.
Channel Mixer and Levels applied. Also B and C.
Burn and Dodge tools to get an even balance re shadows on his face.

very nice job. I think it looks like a really old photo or a wonderfully detailed sketch. That much detail would take years by hand.

Thank you - it'll be interesting to see how this develops. I wasn't happy with his left cheek where I smudged it. Didn't absorb the 'grain' so well so I selected that part and added more and it made a minor difference. I spent too much time on it and needed to stop. I'd like to try this again but starting out with a more evenly balanced contrast and someone with hair too.

Never thought of even attempting this challenge ;p
I really like your second submission. Great job there.
