My first thought on this challenge was "I'm trying to be a good photoshop-user, I'm not able to work wonders", but I tried...

0. copied right picture side, mirrored and covered the white area with it
1. Level correction
2. sharpening
3. removed some spots
4. NeatImage to kill grain
5. cloned picture, gave it a relief filter and set this layer into blending mode to simulate sharpness
6. increased contrasts with manual dodge&burn
7. tried to sharpen it even more by using the sharpen-brush (sorry, dont know the correct english name of it) but just incread the artifacts...

Curios to see what the other challengers will make out of this... I'm stummied at this point.

Good work in getting detail out of this image.
It was a difficult challenge with major artifacts!
The sharpen tool is very unpredictable on a picture like this, but your completed image does not seem oversharpened to me.

Very nice Marc. Levels and contrast look really good and the facial details are well recovered and unaltered. Has a great painterly look.
