desaturated the image and created duplicate layer. Used the blur tool on the face.
Create a new layer and painted in white over the cheeks, brought down the opacity and fill.
Did the above step for the neck and nose.
Create new layers and drew in some facial detail, bringing the opacity and fill down on each.
Duplicateded the layer and did mulitpy Mode - lower opacity and fill.
Created new layers in Soft Light Mode and using both black and white added some definition.
Ran the image in Neat Image to clear it up a bit more.

Yes, you are right. This was a difficult challenge. I don't think it is as bad as some I've seen here, but very nearly. Thanks for the restoration.

I think this is probably as good as you could get from such a poor original. Really good work. Nice description too.

It's amazing how much different approaches we get... and at the end, most of us end using NeatImage. You added a good amount of definition back to the picture using your soft light layer... good work.

Excellent facial details, contrast and smoothing. Could maybe use more shadowing to slim the cheeks. I really like the dark, rich tones.

I love the luminous quality to this one. Very dreamy and sweet.
