I've always liked hedcuts. I used to work with them when I worked on a local newspaper. [We actually set hot-type on an old linotype machine]
My pen and ink work leans toward pointilism so this challenge intrigued me. I had played around with similar things for a while but this made me want to do something about it.
Technique:
I tried running the grain filter on the original image but it turned out to be too fine. I reduced the image to 800 pixels wide and liked the look better. I then cropped it a bit to look a little more like the WSJ type hedcuts. I had already masked out the figure to take out the background.
Desaturated the image.
I ran levels to refine the contrast.
From there I ran Filter>Texture>Grain. Set grain type to speckle, contrast to 100%, intensity to around 70%.
I thought there could be a little more contrast especially on his left ear which was quite washed out, so I hit undo and did some burning in the light areas and dodging in the darker areas. Then I ran the filter again and came up with this image. I would have done more experimenting but am having trouble with photoshop [it crashes often]. I think with further reduction of the image it may be even more like a hedcut.
Hope you like it... Kent
