I wanted to give this photo a slight hand tinted look while maintaining a sepia quality. I plan to upload a restored version more closely resembling the original photo soon.

My steps were:

1. Split image into RGB channels
2. Kept the blue one. Duplicated background layer, set blending mode to screen, and lowered opacity to 50%
3.Masked the man and replaced the background-it's usually faster for me to replace backgrounds than to repair them
4.Used render clouds filter using two shades of gray close in value.
5.Repaired some of the larger cracks/tears with AKVIS Retoucher-a real time saver ( check www.akvis.com for more info on this plugin)
6.Selectivley used dust and scracthes filter on face, uniform and hat.
7. Used clone tool to clean up misc blemishes
8. Used hue/sat/brightness command to colorize picture to a nice sepia tone
9. Colorized buttons, face, etc for the light tinted effect

This is excellent. I always seem to obliterate natural textures but you've retained those on his jacket and hat. Thanks for the link to AKVIS, I'm happy to check out anything that saves time with restoration...!

Great work. I love the depth of field created by the blurred background and realisic jacket texture

You did such a great job on this...the colorization is subtle yet effective. You have managed to maintain great texture as well...I strive for results like this, but haven't gotten there...yet! Super job.

Great work Phillip,

Like the other members I like the light touches of color.
And the right side of the face is really well done.
The only suggestion I can make is -
The soldier's face and uniform have a fair amount of grain.
Yet the background is very very smooth.
Add noise-amount 3 – gaussian - mono - applied to the background
would even out the grain over the whole photo.
This is just my opinion.
Many people may prefer a smooth background to a grainy one.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I agree, Matt-the background is smoother than I intended. I did add a very small amount of noise and used the gaussian blur.
It basically cancelled out what I was attempting.

I went ahead and added noise to the background because it really needed it, and I brought out a little more contrast in the badge on his hat - I think it's a bit better

Phillip:
Every time I get into RP I get sooo depressed...When am I going to be able to do what you all do....!!!!

I would like to ask you some questions and see if I understood:
After step 7., I imagine you merge back the channels...yes?
Then you used Image>Adjusments>Hue/Saturation/lightness, to get the sepia tone (can I use Image>Adjustmens>Variations instead...?)
Finally you isolated the buttons, face, etc. to colorize.....yes?
How do you colorize a picture, I've never done it...do you again do it with Hue/Saturation or use other tools.
This question goes to all the experts that can teach me how to colorize an image.
Please be thorough in your instructions.
Thanks

Mosha
