From the comments on my first effort (thanks everyone), I took that as a basis, created a textured paper background, cut and pasted the figure at a slightly reduced size.

Hope this is an improvement, comments welcome,

This is a good simple clean-up, no frills. I like that. It doesn't look too messed about with, if you know what I mean.

This is really nice! You not only got rid of the damage, but added a very classy touch with the larger background and vignetting of the portrait only. I'll have to remember this, as it is a wonderful treatment for a special picture.

Good job! I like the way you preserved the colouring, and the vignetting helps keep the overall feel of the photo.
