I was able to correct most of the damage by replacing the blue channel with info from the red channel. This got rid of the yellow spots for the most part.
A curves adjustment layer brought back some color balance.
To get rid of the canvas texture I used a dust/scratches filter at a pretty high setting. I made that a pattern, undid the filter and "painted" on the un-textured pattern. I didn't touch the eyes, mouths, or details such as the smocking on the dress or plaid on the jacket.
I made another pattern from a dust/scratches at a very low setting and used this to get rid of some of the texture in the clothing but keep the details.
I blurred around the eyes and mouths to get rid of the texture there, and then used
a pattern made by applying the unsharp filter and painted back in some detail.
I did some highlighting to bring out the eyes and some detail in the hair.
The dark edges were lightened with dodging, and then I airbrushed the background with one of the predominant colors using "color" as a setting.
I debated desaturating this picture to make the texture correction easier but decided to try another option. I have a hard time colorizing and wanted to avoid it!
This is a corrected version, as Timbo points out, the teeth and eyes were too bright! They looked like a commercial for toothpaste and eyedrops! Part of the problem may have been the color profile I had assigned...I changed it to Adobe RGB to match this site and that helped.

This is a great job, but (for me) I think you have slightly over-whitened the eyes and teeth..........only slighlty .

LOL! I agree with you! It looked pretty good here at home, but when I saw it posted it really stands out. I'll see if I can correct and repost. Thanks for the input!
I corrected it and I think it is better. In retrospect I think I changed it from Adobe RGB to SRGB...I get confused about profiles...and so much more! LOL!

I love your approach to a very difficult problem. I'm going to copy down the steps and try it out myself.

I think this is great and it inspired me to have a crack at it. Trouble is, I liked the canvas texture! it was those pesky blotches that got me.
I also think that maybe it should be a tad more high key.

I liked the texture too, and may go back and see if I can leave the texture but get rid of the blotches. Working with the channels seems to get rid of most of the problem, so it may be doable. Plus, I just upgraded to CS so now have patch/heal available...which might help? Thanks for the kind words.

Franny, great job here. I can see why the colour in my work look washed out. I should add the Adobe RGB colour profile to my work and re-submit to see if it works. Thanks for your comment. Cheers.
