The idea was to improve on the original, by bringing back some colour to the shot.

All I really did is use a layer for each coloured section. I set each layer to colour then just picked out one colour (ie brown [dog]) then hand painted. If I went outside the area I wanted to colour, I just erased it. Then reduced the opacity to try to get the saturation right. The background wall I painted then used the gradient tool on low opacity to get a shadow type effect. I did lightly blurr the curtains and lawn area, just to bring the dogs forward a bit. I had to guess at some of the colours so I tried to use typical sixties colouring. (disgusting!)
Next I did some touch up painting round the eyes (something I've never done before), because in the original thy were just black blurrs.
Finally some sharpening and contrast adjustment.

Well I've printed out a copy for my wifes gran, and it doesn't look too bad. What do you think?

Cool work! Colorizing the sofa (?) they're sitting on must have been a real pain... like it.

Fantastic. I'm jealous. I did wonder if desaturating the bean bag and background a wee bit would concentrate the eye on the doggies. My eye keeps getting dragged to the carpet.
