I always wondered what my first restoration would look like if I hadn’t added the Bar room background.

I tried to create an old studio background that would blend with the boy’s.
I used the Boy’s from my first restoration. I’m not crazy enough to do all that work again! They were dark, so this was going to be a low-key work.

I hammered the original background with a massive dose of blurring.
Then I hit it hard with grain. At this stage I figured a floor and curtain was my best option to avoid the boys looking as though they were floating.

I made the curtain using the texture filter and added grain. Used a similar method for the floor. I wanted a battered old curtain that looked as worn as the rest of this old photo. Then a lot of burning to help the boys blend in.

It’s a very very dark restoration.
I felt the wisps of smoke added a little interest to the photo.
Thanks for the idea Sharon.

I'm new on the site, the forums and restoration, so I'm far from being in a position to give an any "expert" opinions.

I think the restoration of the figures is excellent – particularly the way you have brought out the details of the waistcoats and the shoes, and I would say that the background is just right.

If you don’t mind me adding a little criticism – do the guys not appear to be floating above the ground (particularly the ones standing) – would a little shadow under the shoes, and maybe the chair legs improved this?

You spruced them up nicely Matt.
Great job on the clothes.
The middle guy face looks great. The chair looks really nice.
I think they look like they just came into some money when compared
to mines The camera guy's aim has improved too.
Good job on centering them.

Bill ….. It’s invaluable to have another member have a long hard look at your work. And then go to the trouble to make constructive comments.
Originally I had a darker shadow under the guys. But later on I lightened the entire retouch and inadvertently lightened the shadow.
Welcome to the torture area of Retouch, Bill.

Sharon ….. Thanks for the comments.
The face on the guy sitting wasn’t too hard but the faces on those standing were murder. I tried to improve their looks but started to stray from the original.

I hate cut off limbs in photos I just had to center them a little.
The boys are in their best suits with cigars in a carefully set up pose.
Yet the Photographer couldn’t get them all in the frame?
The guy who took this photo was obviously drunk and seeing double.

Matt...

I've had a look at your other submission for this one, and they definitely have their feet firmly on the ground!

This certainly is a very tough one - I'm working on it now - can't even see their feet - you've done a magnificent job in finding them!!!
