This was a nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon—contemplating Armageddon at the hands of a six-year-old. I lassoed every square inch of the kid and saved each section (pants, shirt, skin, etc.) to a new alpha channel for future use. (I ultimately gave up on my plan to alter or colorize the clothing. I thought the alien child still needed some cool "kid clothes".) I was then able to essentially hit delete and make the old background disappear. Nay . . . disintegrate! I found three images—the Earth, and two "star fields". One of these contained what looked like some sort of nebula. I colorized said nebula into a fiery inferno. I then took the Smudge tool and made some errant flames out from the center. I then applied a Linear Gradient to the Earth and faded it out with the Linear Burn blend. Next, I went to work on the kid's new skin tone. I found that just using the Hue/Saturation filter to colorize was not terribly effective. I instead used the Selective Color filter and started hacking away at all of those sliders. Seemed like they'd never end! Interestingly enough (for me anyhow) I settled on green not because of the stereotypical Martian image, but because it looked best in space and with his chosen wardrobe. I drew a roughly alien-cranium-shaped shape around the poor child's head and proceeded to fill it in using a combination of solid color fills, gradients, and Stamp Tool. I also added texture such as Grain-clumps and Add Noise-monochrome.) Finally, I sharpened the little E.T.'s teeth using the Stamp Tool. (I also brightened them up a bit.) And added the obligatory Whitley Strieber-type, almond-shaped eyes and beveled them a bit. I think that about covers it. Now you too can make your very own Evil Space Spawn!
