Octo-boy & "Speckles"

PixiePirate Junior Member Registered: March 2004 Location: Philadelphia suburbs Posts: 22 users gallery	Ah, nothing is cuter than a boy and his pet-unless the both of them are hideous sea creatures! AGH! So, the 3 main tools used to create this were the liquify filter, pattern maker filter, and smudge tool. I used an image of an aquarium for the background, and found an image of an octopus in the right lighting. I wanted one with more tentacles showing but I had no luck finding one. For fish boy I used some of the parts from an image of a deepsea creature I found, and the rest is all made up! I had to create patterns for the texture on his skin (I think there are 3 different ones) and change the underlying skintone to get the effect. It was fun experimenting! To get the octopus to appear to be in the boys lap I first selected the boys forearm and knee then made them a new layer. Then I placed the new layer on top of the ocotpus layer and erased anywhere that I wanted the octopus to show, like the tentacles over his leg, ect. Viola! As a final touch I added highlights and shadows by painting them in with a soft brush set on 15%. Boys will be boys, even in the deep blue sea......

I may not sleep for the rest of the month. Ugh! Amazing image. I'm particulary creeped by the boy's teeth. His head looks like some aquatic Zulu nightmare mask! hah. (Now hearing refrains of "Under da Sea" from "The Little Mermaid." AAaaaahhh!!)

Wow! Give the boy some gills & I'd believe he's real. Very scary. Can you share details on highlights / shadows placement & creation for neophytes such as myself?

Sure, no problem!
The technique I use is very basic-I'm sure they are better ways to create shadows but this is what I do:

1. Using Photoshop I create a new blank layer on my final flattened version.
2.Using a soft,small brush set at 15-20% I paint in shadows and highlights where I think they should be. I'm still learning-my artistic abilities need major improvment! Anyway, using the lower opacity helps me build up the shadow/highlight gradually and since it's on its own layer I can erase if/when I mess up.
3.I like to use the smudge tool set anywhere from 20-50% to help blend the shadows/highlights and help the appear more soft and "natural" around the edges.
4.When I'm happy with the results I flatten and upload to RP!

Tip: For people like myself who have trouble with shadow/highlight placement I find it helpful to have a copy of the original image open or an image with similar lighting. That way you have a reference for where to place your paint!
