The biggest challenge for me was how to get rid of the texture of the paper on his face. I looked around and found a tutorial on this site that suggested using a plug-in called neat image. I found it and used it at it really helped, I used some of the other suggestion from the tutorial about making a selection from the blue channel and coping it to a new layer set the blend mode to screen.
I used the clone and patch tools to fill in the crack.
I wanted it to still look like an old photo, so I put some of the texture back into the background after i had taken it all out.

Nice work Cathy. Face is very smooth and facial features are clean and sharp. Cap looks great and the badge is very impressive. Like your background too. The tunic maybe needs catching up with face and cap (seems a bit faded/blotchy in comparison).

Thanks for the feed back. I'm new at this and i'm having a lot of fun with it.
I left the bottom half unfinished on purpose because I wanted it to still look like an old photo.
Since posting this I have worked on the rest of the shirt.
thanks again.
