Very clean Lorraine. I like how the side cushions become part of the sides and cut into the wooded sides. That is probably likely how it was as I have seen chairs like that. Could you go into a little more detail on your shading technique? I like the effect and versatility much better than the multiple drop shadows I rely on. I make a selection, duplicate a pull a different drop shadow on each layer but am limited to what the drop shadow can do. I have yet to figure out how to, if possible, erase on a drop shadow or change its color. Good work!

This is the best color restoration I’ve seen in a long time Lorraine.
Outstanding work in every area.
I like the violinist’s graceful pose despite the child climbing over her chair.
Best of all she is not looking directly at the camera and mugging.
The chair is absolutely outstanding.
In the original she appeared to be sitting high in a low seat.
Adding legs and defining the seat has given a more natural look.
I’m sure you were an upholsterer in a previous life.
Nice ankles Lorraine!
No shoes peeping from under the skirt for you.
Matt

Thank you so much somtim and Matt!!!
Trying to restore the bottom of the photo was very difficult. I kept making her look like Thumbelina, until I realized that the chair was too low.
Yep, Matt, I have done some upholstery work.
LOL about the ankles, but don't forget, I retouched them also
Somtim, the shadowing technique is one I learned from Katrin Eismann's book "Photoshop Restoration & Retouching." You just add low opacity "multiply" layers above or below the areas you want to create shadows and highlights. Paint/airbrush with black (or a dark color) on those layers until the shading looks right. I've rarely been successful using the Photoshop drop shadow effect.
Another shadow technique that I learned from a class in Paint Shop Pro is to cut out the subject you want to shadow and copy it to its own layer. Duplicate that copy. Use a hue/saturation adjustment on the duplicate to make the subject completely black. Then add a gaussian blur to it. Position the layer under the original subject and move the shadow and also adjust the layer opacity to your liking. I hope this helps.

It does, thanks. I have much to learn and am working some areas way too hard. It is soooo nice to get the inside scoop on these things from people who know. Restoration is so subtle compared to what I have used Photoshop on in the past. Contrast, blurs, and heavy shadows work well for video, not so much for print or monitor display.

Thank you vijayan and Anonymous.
vijayan, I try to use as many learning tools as I can since photo restoration is so difficult. I've taken a few online classes. I use Eismann's book, and some of the many tutorials on the site. It's a great help and time saver to learn from the experts.
