Here's what I did. I first opened the image up in GIMP and cut out the black background. I then duplicated this layer. Afterwards, I used Flaming Pears Pixel Trash filter in grayscale mode (Courseness=0, Range=10, Sharpen=37, Radius=17). I set this layer property to screen and flattened all layers (gives a sketch like look). I then resized the image so the height would be set to 800px. I then used the free version of Amphisoft's Xylograph filter (Lines density=141, Lines angle=45, Waves amount=0, Lines curvature=0, Lines drift=0) in the following way: I rotate the layer to 45 degrees. I duplicate the layer and then the top layer is mirrored horizontal. I apply the xylograph filter to both layers. I again mirror the top layer and then rotate it back 45 deg. I then rotate the second layer 45 deg. I set the top layer to lighten only and merge all layers. I would use flaming pear's India Ink, but someone else already did so. I think this gives a more accurate result to the Headshot effect anyway.

It sure does look more accurate and excellent from where I'm sitting! Clever idea rotating.

Thanks Neve. After look at the Wall Street Journals headshots again, I should have used a reticulation technique. Would have been a lot easier and faster.

Very nice and probably one of the best to date. Kudos.

Thanks Janet. When I was part-owner of a printing company (I was doing typesetting and graphic arts, among other things; good with computers and such), I was looking for alternatives to classical am dithering (lpi that is; lines per inch method). The above method was what I came up with, but my then father-in-law insisted on staying with lpi dithering (loses some detail; also requires much higher dpi for the image, but almost every known software package as well as postscript printer supports this method). By the way, the above is an am-fm (stoichiastic) dithering technique which gives the pleasing eye advantage of am dithering and the accuracy (hence the smaller image size) of fm dithering. Floyd-Steinberg (fm dithering) method, in my opinion, is unexceptable except when doing landscapes or furred animals. I first ran across this dithering type on a coca-cola ad and thought it would be cool to emulate. It took a lot of thinking to come up with this method, but when I came across amphisoft's filter, I knew I had a way.

Very cool effect. I'll have to experiment with the flaming pears filters. Good job.
